The exploration of consciousness and the spiritual life are primary in my work. A long time resident of Texas, my work often reflects the open vistas and multiculturalism of the Southwest. From smaller work to mural sized canvases, the imagery calls on the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the painting. Juxtaposition of figure background often reveals hidden imagery within my work. I personally believe that we are spiritual beings having a material experience here on Earth, and that the purpose of our sojourn here is to learn and evolve. My creativity is my path of learning, evolving and reaching out. I was born in Akron, Ohio and was raised in the at that time rural countryside of Tallmadge. I showed a proficiency and passion for art and innovation from a very early age, drawing, painting and creating sculptures from whatever I could find in my father's workshop. I attended Kent State University in the tumultuous 70's, studying art and developing a political consciousness. I was “there” on May 4. I have some formal training in Art, but am primarily self taught. My young adult life was spent in California, and in the Eastern United States. I eventually moved to Texas. It was here in Texas that I eventually met, married, had two children and divorced. It was at this time I turned my attention more fully to my work and became a full time professional artist. I opened my own studio in Austin, Texas, becoming known for my oil painting and innovative sculpture. Email: dibonastudio@yahoo.com Website: www.joycedibona.com |
