DARK CANDLES

Helena Jones is a headstrong and
determined woman. She speaks Latin
and Ancient Greek and owns an alternative retail business devoted to
bringing dark and mysterious fragrances
into people's homes and imaginations. She's a prominent female business owner in the gothic, deviant and alternative subcultures. After being in business for over 5 years, Helena feels that since she's made it this far, the only way there is to go is up. ~HELENA

1. When did you get started? I've been in business since early 2003. It's been over 5 years now!

2. Why candles and what made you decide on the name "Dark Candles" rather than the all too common angelic names that most candle companies are throwing around?
My candles were dark in color and the ideas around the scents were dark, mysterious, etc. It just made sense to have the company name relflect both the mood of the products and to describe what I sell all at the same time! If I had named it "Dark Yearning" or something like that, no one would know what the company sold. I think a name is very important. I got my college degree in the Classics, which is what i love and where my heart is, but I got my minor in business. The courses I took in marketing, management, finance and accounting have really helped me in being a small business owner. Learning about things like branding, supply/ demand, product markup, etc. has helped me so much. There's a ton more to running a business than just having a great product. It's a lot of hard work!

3. What else do you sell and what is
your best seller?
My newest product is scented sachets. I also have plans to come out with other no-flame home fragrance products soon. My best sellers are the votives. I've sold well over 60,000 votives since I started Dark Candles. Maybe even more than that!

4. Where can we purchase your merchandise? At my website, http://
www.darkcandles.com I also have products in various retail hops around North America. There is a "locations" tab on my website where you can check out a location near you.

5. Will there be a physical address for us candle lovers to come in and shop soon? Currently there are no plans for a "Dark Candles" retail shop. I don't have enough slave labor for that endeavor yet! However, you can still check out the retail locations that stock my products (see above). It's great because then you don't have to pay for shipping

Combining toys and art never looked so cool

“ N'REAZON is much like me, bright and colorful with a Alternative edge.” Pictured: Va' D with JellySwamp and Stealthy Ninja Custom Toy Photo by KDai Timmons

To purchase Art and our Vinyl Art Toys you can visit www.nreazon.com

24 year old Va' D creator and main artist for N'Reazon has had her share of professions. First starting out in corporate America then Club Promotions, Graphic Design, Hair and Wardrobe Stylist and Make-up artist. But nothing has been more satisfying than putting art to vinyl .“ I definitely have to say that being a Make Up Artist was the launch board of me becoming a Artist and Designing Vinyl Toys. I mostly specialize in doing make up for photo shoots, movies, special effects, and runway. The real awe moment was in doing body painting. That's when I felt I was able to be the most artistic. I became discouraged when hours of work only lasted for a few minutes and was then washed away. I soon moved over to preserving my art on canvas and graphic art. N'REAZON is much like me bright, colorful with a Alternative edge. Some might say that it follows under the urban, lowbrow, graffiti style of art movement. Next thing I knew I found myself getting caught up in the addiction of collecting and creating Urban Vinyl Toys. My favorite thing about using a vinyl toy as a medium is that it gives my art movement and life. You can play with it, touch it, interact with this art a
s opposed to a canvas where all you can do is look at it. I was amazed to see how many people collect them not as toys but as pieces of art and highly appreciate the work that went into each toy.”
These Vinyl Toys are highly accessible and affordable from $10 and up and it doesn't hurt the pocket like a $1500 canvas. All the toys by N'REAZON are hand painted customs; which makes each toy one of a kind. It takes about 1 to 2 days create one toy depending on how intricate the design is. The more accessories and detail the longer it takes to get produced. N'REAZON is in the works of producing its own blind box series and limited edition pieces which will be limited anywhere from 200-500 pieces worldwide. Since I have started N'REAZON I have collaborated with different people in the Entertainment Business to get a new twist and style. Billy Syn who is a Music Producer and Rapper for Valley of the Kings has helped me out extensively in creating fresh ideas that I know everyone will love. I hope to one day collaborate with some of my favorite artists that I have grown to really admire like Gary Baseman, Tara McPherson, Tim Biskup, Joe Ledbetter the list could go on and on. N'REAZON isn't just stopping there; we are talking about clothing, skate decks, and accessories. We are also in the works of putting together some Gallery Showings and events of our Art Toys. ~ Va'D

Azrael's Accomplice Designs opened in 1996 as an outlet for owner Tracy Robertson's historically-inspired clothing.  Robertson was frustrated by the poor quality and unimpressive designs of some of the contemporary gothic clothing designers.  “Far too many times these days alternative clothing is now considered something cheap or tacky,” Robertson explains.  “Part of my design mission has always been to show that alternative or gothic clothing doesn't have to be cliché and can be very high end and elegant.”

Robertson blends elements of fantasy, history and Asian fashion into her creations.  Most of her line is couture and high-end.  “I don't see my clothing as something you have to put on day to day, but something you wear to feel special.” Much of Robertson's line consists of beautifully crafted corsets, skirts and gowns.  Typical price ranges fall anywhere between $100 - $5000 or more depending on the item, and almost any item in her line can be custom-sized.

Gloomth & the Cult of Melancholy is dedicated to resurrecting the elegance of well-constructed and distinctive Gothic attire. Specializing in one of a kind pieces suiting every facet of the broad spectrum of "Goth"- from Visual Kei to elaborate Neo-Victorian.

We carry an enormous selection of men's and women's clothing, plus sizes, accessories, and original Ulna "arm" warmers and cuffs. Gloomth firmly believes that true originality and beauty should not be overpriced.

Gloomth launched in February of 2007, after much research and market testing. Created by Taeden Hall, Gloomth embodies every aspect of her interest in art and design. Taeden graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Design, and worked as an Illustrator prior to developing Gloomth. She has been sewing her own clothing since early high school, after growing tired with the dim goods of local malls. Gloomth was created with a genuine love of original and unique clothing, and to address the growing same-ness of "mainstream" gothic attire. Taeden's own morbid leanings have always driven her to the "gothic" style, and the same themes present in her artwork now echo in the clothing. All of the photography for Gloomth is completed by Derek Cutting, her camera-wielding husband, including the array of new Gloomth Models who now appear in our vast range of clothing. Gloomth's target audience is as varied as the styles we carry. Gloomth was made for any Goth who has ever remarked about the new uniform of the "brand name" goth attire, the poor quality and high prices of such, and the lack of true originality and passion in clothing. Gloomth is for anyone who understands that art can be transferred to consumable goods, and that some styles are timeless.
